Imagine this. You ask your favourite AI assistant for advice, and it gives you an answer that sounds, well... suspiciously familiar. It's not groundbreaking, it’s not mind-blowing. In fact, it’s just comfortable. But what if I told you that the “comfort” you feel might be AI leading you down a well-worn path of bias. One programmed into its very code?
Let’s unravel this with care. AI is biased, and not just biased in the subtle ways you might expect, but in very real ways that can influence your life. This bias isn’t a glitch. It’s baked in, and that should make us all take a moment to think.
AI Mirrors Us – But Should It?
AI doesn’t just pop out of nowhere with all-knowing intelligence. No, it learns from us. The messy, biased, contradictory humans. So, when AI tells you something that feels just right, it’s probably because it’s following patterns built on flawed, biased data from the real world.
Take hiring algorithms, for example. Imagine you’re a woman or a person of colour looking for a job. Now, if the AI has been trained on historical data, it may recommend candidates who look like... well, people who have been hired before. And who are those people? Likely, white men. Without realising it, AI can easily reinforce the same biases it was designed to overcome. Suddenly, you’re not just dealing with a machine, you’re dealing with a machine reflecting back some of worst parts of our world.
Now let’s take this deeper.
The Holistic Health Paradox
If you’ve ever looked for alternative health information from an AI, you might notice a pattern. “Proceed with caution,” it says. “Not proven,” it warns. Why? Because the medical research it’s been trained on is overwhelmingly not focused on holistic or alternative approaches. Big Pharma funds most of the research, so of course, AI spits out the same conventional wisdom. "Stick to the approved drugs."
Ask it to tell you how much money is spent researching alternative health practices, and AI might awkwardly admit, “Not much.” But here’s the twise, if you ask it about medical research, it’ll also tell you that much of the data is skewed by pharmaceutical companies, who only fund research that supports their products. The AI knows something’s off but can’t escape its own programming. It’s stuck in a loop, a loop that’s making you miss out on crucial health options.
But the deeper question remains: Who’s writing these rules?
Programmed Bias – At Whose Command?
Every AI is shaped by its programmers, Their values, their goals, their biases. If a company wants to steer you toward a certain decision or product, they can tweak the AI just enough to nudge you in that direction. In the wrong hands, AI is not just biased, it becomes a tool for manipulation. And because AI relies on vast amounts of data, anyone with access to that data can shape the outcome.
The worst part? You won’t even realise it’s happening. The soothing words, the repeated patterns, they make you feel safe, make you feel like you’re getting the best advice possible. But are you? Or are you being steered, ever so gently, toward a reality that someone else programmed?
AI's Influence on Human Intelligence
Here’s the uncomfortable truth, Every time you rely on AI for answers, you’re subtly giving up a little bit of your own intelligence. Why think for yourself when the AI can do it for you? Every answer it gives is reinforcing the idea that you don’t need to dig deeper, that the easy answer is the best answer.
Before long, you might find yourself trusting the AI more than your own judgment. And when that happens, what’s left of our human intelligence? Are we just programming ourselves out of existence, one comfortable, and potentially biased answer at a time?
The Power of Critical Thinking
AI is an incredible tool, but only if we use it wisely. If we allow ourselves to be lulled into a sense of security, thinking that AI knows best, we lose the very thing that makes us human. Our ability to question, to push boundaries, and to think critically.
So next time you ask your AI for advice, take a moment. Ask yourself: “Is this the best answer, or just the most convenient one?”
Because the real danger isn’t that AI is biased. It’s that we might stop questioning it altogether.
